Wood Fences and Fencing – Popular, Affordable, Versatile

Wood fence is an affordable, classic look for privacy, protection and landscaping.  Wood fencing comes in assorted heights and styles and can be constructed to closely follow contours of the land, so it’s very versatile too.

Perhaps the biggest advantage of wood fence, however, is the cost.  Wood is readily available and affordable, at least in central Missouri.  It’s also easy to work with wood during fence construction, making it less expensive than other options to install.

A potential disadvantage to building your next fence out of wood, however, is that wood is subject to rot and to insect damage.

At Columbia Fence, we understand that and use wood types and installation processes to make your fence installation as attractive and durable as possible.  We offer pressure treated lumber and set posts in concrete (which minimizes contact with damp soil and access to termites).  Period application of paint or a high quality wood sealer is still recommended.

Styles of Wood Fence

Wood fences are customarily built in one of three general styles, each suited to different conditions.

  • Privacy Fencing: Slats are placed close together so that it blocks the view.  Privacy fence is a good idea when you don’t want people to see into your yard, and comes in various heights.  The top of the fence can also be straight or rounded.  You’ll also appreciate a privacy fence when you don’t want the dog to see every passerby and start barking!
  • Picket Fencing: Traditional picket fences consists of pointed wooden sticks fixed into the ground, with pieces of wood nailed across them.  Slats are further apart in a picket fence, making them more suitable for marking boundaries or restricting access rather than restricting the view.
  • Shadowbox Fencing: An increasingly popular option for privacy and good lucks is the Shadowbox or “board on board” fence.  Slats are installed on both sides of a central board so that it looks the same from front and back.  It’s more ornamental than standard privacy fences and allows some wind to pass through, but is more expensive because of the overlapping picket design.
